Matt PusateriI got my start in design as a high school and college journalist. I loved writing, but was also intrigued by the craft and thinking that drove layout and page design. Early on, I learned that good design is good communication.

My design philosophy hasn’t changed much over the past twenty years: I start with the idea that good design conveys ideas; it’s not mere decoration and it shouldn’t get in the way. Design should help individuals, businesses, and organizations connect with clients, supporters, and broader audiences. Good design should be useful, effective, and beautiful.

In 1996, I went to work as a designer for Holland & Knight LLP and soon became manager of their in-house design team. I learned a lot about managing projects and people, working with teams, communicating with clients, training novice designers, and helping an organization move from traditional marketing to digital and web. During this time, I also freelanced for a variety of clients in both the private and public sector. In 2004, I went to work for People for the American Way, where I built websites and designed multimedia.

In 2006, I became the Senior Designer at Center for American Progress, a think tank that advocates progressive ideas and policies. At CAP, I built and redesigned websites, email campaigns, and interactive media. Two years later, I became the Center’s Art Director. In addition to handling most of the Center’s web design and creative direction, I manage a team of in-house designers and multimedia producers.

I live in Washington, D.C. with my beautiful wife Yvette, my daughters Isabella and Angelina, and our yellow dog Ace. I might just be the luckiest guy in the world.
