Web Site: Science Progress
Design Challenge: Client wanted to launch an online magazine with both articles and blog posts about science and policy. The project had a limited budget and wanted to use open source tools and content management systems. Visually, they wanted a design that clean and simple — without clichè “scientific” images and stock art — that would allow them to focus more on their writing and content. At the same time, they didn’t want something boring.
Solution:I worked with client to develop a typographic logo that was modern-looking, but not heavy and overbearing on the page. We developed a home page that could present a mix content, ranging from a major feature story, weekly longer articles, and daily blog posts. The site was built with WordPress, using custom themes and templates to allow for special layouts for different types of content. For the articles, I worked up a story page layout similar to those used on New York Times and Time.com. Special CSS styles and custom fields were built into the WordPress installation to make it easy for editors and writers to post their own content easily, with photos and captions, without having to ever look at HTML code.
