I'm not really sure that it matters. Most email clients will strip out everything above the BODY tag from your original. To my knowledge, all email clients re-interpret the HTML for their own rendering engine, some much better than others. Outlook and Gmail are pretty bad. Hotmail and Yahoo Mail are a lot better. But for the most post part, I think the doctype will get scrambled either way. This might be useful to you as a resource: http://www.campaignmonitor.com/css/

Hope that helps....

Some other additions:

Think about what colour your text is - if you've got a black background with a white block on top and black copy, when the user forwards it on, their writing will end up black on black.

If you're using a black background with a light bgimage over that and black text on the bgimage, what happens when the bgimage isn't visible - you may get black text on a black background

Always have an unsubscribe option

Animated gifs don't animate in outlook 2007. one workaround is to have the frame with key info show for a microsecond before your regular animation plays. A normal user won't see the first frame, but an outlook 2007 user will at least see the most important info even if it's not animated.

Hi Matt,

Do you mind telling me what email clients the H5 alt text workaround works for....?

We've tested it in the office on the few major email clients; Outlook 2003, Live Mail, Gmail etc... and the closest we came to getting it to work was the fact that it turned the:

Great introductory article Matt, and thanks for the links to Campaign Monitor.

In regards to your point 7, with Campaign Monitor you always have the option to send multipart text+html, so that a full text alternative can be shown for any email client that needs (or prefers) it.

We're also going to be offering some optional testing services through Campaign Monitor in the future, which should be a great help in that area.
